Four reasons a flag is green

In Islamic tradition green carries a long association with paradise and with the Prophet, which is why it dominates flags from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan to Mauritania. In Pan-Africanism, green is one of the three colours of the 1920 Universal Negro Improvement Association flag alongside red and black, and it recurs across the continent for that reason. In Pan-Arab colours — black, white, green and red — green stands for the Fatimid dynasty. And in a large number of flags green simply means land: forest, farmland, or the fertility that a mostly agricultural economy was built on.

These reasons are not mutually exclusive and several flags carry more than one at once, which is why reading a flag's colours as a single message usually fails. The note beneath each flag on its country page gives the specific stated meaning rather than the general tradition.

Green as the identifying colour

A handful of flags are green enough to be identified by that alone. Saudi Arabia's is a plain green field with the Shahada and a sword in white. Libya flew an entirely plain green flag from 1977 to 2011, the only national flag in modern history with no design on it whatsoever. Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nigeria are all predominantly green with a single simple element. If green was the first thing you noticed rather than something you had to look for, start with those.
