Counting by continent is the quickest way to see whether a design tradition is regional or global. Asia accounts for the largest share of this collection with 11 of the 18.

The crescent is older than its usual association

The crescent moon is widely read today as an Islamic symbol, but it long predates that use. It appears on coins of Byzantium centuries before the city became Constantinople, and it was a civic emblem there. The Ottomans adopted it after taking the city in 1453, and because the Ottoman Empire was for centuries the most visible Muslim power in Europe's field of view, the symbol travelled with that association attached. Several countries that fly a crescent today do so through Ottoman inheritance rather than through any scriptural instruction — there is none.

That history matters for identification. It means the crescent is not a reliable indicator of a country's religion, and it also appears in contexts unconnected to Islam: Nepal's uniquely non-rectangular flag carries a moon on its upper pennant alongside a sun on the lower one, drawn from the royal and Rana houses.

Telling the close pairs apart

Türkiye and Tunisia are the pair most often confused: both are red with a white crescent and a single star, but Tunisia encloses its crescent and star inside a white disc, while Türkiye places them directly on the red field and offset toward the centre. Pakistan and Turkmenistan are both green with a crescent and star and both carry a hoist-side element, but Pakistan's is a plain white band and Turkmenistan's is an elaborate vertical carpet-pattern stripe.
