How to identify a flag by its design
- 1. Note the dominant colours first.Two or three main colours will already rule out most of the world's flags.
- 2. Look for a distinct symbol. A star, crescent, animal, or coat of arms narrows a colour-only search dramatically.
- 3. Check the overall pattern. Stripes, a tricolour, a Nordic cross, or a single block of colour point toward different design families entirely.
Why colours and symbols are only clues
Many flags share the same colour palette or a similar emblem, so no single clue guarantees an exact match. Combining a colour with a symbol, a pattern, or a continent filter shrinks the list far more reliably than any one detail alone — which is exactly how the filters above are designed to work together.

- Why do so many flags share the same colours?
- Red, white and blue in particular appear across many national flags because they were historically common dye colours and were later adopted through independence movements, regional alliances, and shared design traditions. Colour alone rarely identifies a single country — pairing it with a symbol or pattern narrows things down much faster.
- How do I find flags with a star on them?
- Select "Star" under the Symbols filter, or open the Flags With Stars collection linked above for the full list with an explanation of what the stars count on each one. Stars appear on flags for very different reasons — states, provinces, unity between regions, or a constellation only visible from that hemisphere.
- Does this tool include territories as well as countries?
- Yes. Alongside UN member states, the dataset includes select territories and dependencies. These are labelled "Territory" on their result card and detail view so the distinction stays clear.
- Can a country's flag design change over time?
- Yes — flags are occasionally redesigned following political change, independence, or a deliberate rebrand, so a flag you remember from years ago may look slightly different today. This tool reflects each country's currently used flag.
